How do you recover abandoned carts on Shopify?

Most Shopify carts never turn into orders. Here is how to measure what you lose, send abandoned cart emails that get clicked, decide on SMS, and stop shoppers from leaving in the first place.

TL;DR

  • โ†’Baymard puts the average cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, and extra costs are the top reason (40%).
  • โ†’Shopify's native abandoned checkout email only reaches shoppers who typed an email, so a flow in Klaviyo or Omnisend adds control but must replace the native one, not run beside it.
  • โ†’Prevention beats recovery: reviews on product pages remove the doubt that makes shoppers leave before checkout.

You recover abandoned carts on Shopify with a short email sequence triggered when a shopper enters an email at checkout and leaves, ideally three emails over about three days. You lose fewer carts to begin with when the doubts that make shoppers leave are answered before they reach checkout.

Both halves matter. An abandoned cart email works on shoppers who were close to buying. Prevention works on everyone else. Most guides only cover the first half, and most are written by the companies that sell you the email tool. This one covers both, with the numbers to size your loss and a sequence timed for Black Friday on November 27, 2026.

Why do customers abandon their carts?

Shoppers abandon carts mainly because the final price is higher than they expected. According to the Baymard Institute, across 50 studies, 40% of abandoners cite extra costs such as shipping, tax and fees. Baymard's average abandonment rate is 70.22% (page updated September 22, 2025), and 42% of US shoppers in its data say they were "just browsing."

Each cause calls for a different fix. Some you solve with an email, and many you solve earlier on the site.

Which causes can an email fix?

An email fixes hesitation, not friction. A shopper who left because shipping cost too much will not come back for a reminder that repeats the same shipping cost. A shopper who got distracted, compared prices or wanted a second opinion will.

Read the table by column three. Costs, delivery and checkout design are site problems. Trust is both: a reminder can restate your returns policy and show reviews, but the shopper who did not trust you with a card number needed that proof before the checkout page.

What is a normal cart abandonment rate, and how do you calculate yours?

A normal cart abandonment rate sits around 70%, and your own rate is one minus your completed orders divided by your created carts. The formula is simple, so the useful part is what you do with the result.

Cart abandonment rate = 1 โˆ’ (completed purchases รท carts created)

Take a store with 2,000 carts created in a month and 600 completed orders. Its abandonment rate is 1 โˆ’ (600 รท 2,000) = 70%. That is 1,400 abandoned carts.

How much revenue do abandoned carts cost you?

Multiply abandoned carts by your average order value. If your average order value is $80, those 1,400 carts represent $112,000 of unrealized sales in the month. If it is $150, the same carts represent $210,000. Read our guide on how to calculate average order value if you do not have that number yet.

Now run a scenario. Say a sequence recovers 5% of those abandoned carts (an assumption for this example, not a benchmark). That is 70 orders, or $5,600 at $80. Your recovery rate will differ, so measure it from your own data.

Do not stop at recovery. Track the share of shoppers who reach checkout against the share who visit a product page. If the first number is the problem, your fix is upstream, and our guide on how to calculate conversion rate shows where to measure it.

What does Shopify send automatically for abandoned checkouts?

Shopify sends an abandoned checkout email only when a shopper has entered an email address and left. At the time of writing, October 2026, Shopify's help center describes two experiences: a legacy page and a newer automation. Check your admin to see which one your store uses.

For the legacy experience, Shopify's help page says a checkout counts as abandoned when it remains incomplete for more than ten minutes after the customer provided their email. If the customer enters a phone number instead, the email can't be sent. Abandoned checkouts older than three months are deleted from the admin.

What does the newer automation change?

Shopify's migration page says the new automation is sent to customers subscribed to email marketing by default. You can change the To field to All customers. Shopify Flow lets you edit the workflow, including the wait time, and the page gives a default wait of 10 hours before an email is sent. It covers the Online Store and Buy Button channels only.

Two warnings from the same page. Activating the new automation is a permanent change, so you cannot go back to the legacy version. And the page covers email only. We did not find anything about native SMS recovery there, so do not assume it exists.

Should Shopify or Klaviyo or Omnisend send the emails?

Use Shopify's native email if you want a simple default, and a flow in Klaviyo or Omnisend if you need branching, segmentation or SMS in the same sequence. Whichever you pick, run one sender only. If both fire, the shopper gets duplicate reminders and your unsubscribe rate rises.

Should Shopify or Klaviyo or Omnisend send the emails?
Your needChoiceWatch out for

We did not compare features between those tools, and we do not cite their benchmark figures here, because a vendor's own statistics are not a neutral reference. Pick on workflow fit, then test.

How do you write an abandoned cart email that gets clicked?

A clicked abandoned cart email does one job: it puts the shopper's cart back in front of them with one button and one reason to come back. Skip the newsletter layout. A plain, short email from your store name reads like a helpful reminder, not a campaign.

An abandoned cart email template that works has five parts:

  1. A subject line that names the product or the problem, not the discount.
  2. A cart image with the product name, size and price.
  3. One button that returns to the cart, not the homepage.
  4. One line that removes a doubt: returns, delivery date or support.
  5. A sender name your customer recognizes.

Which abandoned cart email subject lines work?

Test these abandoned cart email subject lines against each other, one change at a time:

Which abandoned cart email subject lines work?
EmailSubject line example
1 (reminder)You left something in your cart
1 (product-led)Still thinking about the [product name]?
2 (doubt removal)Questions about your order? We can help
3 (last call)Your cart expires soon

Keep the first email free of discounts. A shopper who would have paid full price should not learn that leaving earns a coupon. If you use a code, save it for the last email and limit who gets it.

An example of the body copy for email 1: "Hi Sam, you left the Trail Pack in your cart. It's still there, and so is free returns for 30 days. [Return to your cart]". Short, specific, one button.

What should email 2 say?

Email 2 answers the question the shopper did not ask. Pick the doubt your support inbox sees most and answer it in two lines. For a shoe store, that is size and returns. For a skincare brand, it is ingredients and skin type. For an electronics store, it is warranty.

A working example: "Hi Sam, still deciding on the Trail Pack? Here is what buyers ask us most: it fits a 15-inch laptop, ships in 2 days, and returns are free for 30 days. Reply to this email and a person answers. [Return to your cart]".

Add one or two real review lines if you have them. A sentence from a buyer who bought the same product does more than a sentence from you. If your reviews are thin, that is the signal to fix the prevention side first.

Measure the sequence by orders, not opens. Opens are unreliable on many mail clients. Track revenue per recipient and the share of recipients who complete a purchase within seven days. Compare email 1 alone against the full sequence to see whether emails 2 and 3 earn their place.

When should you send each email in the sequence?

Send the first abandoned cart email within an hour, the second after about a day, and the third after two to three days. This is our recommended starting point, not a universal benchmark. Test your own timing, because your product and price change how long a shopper takes to decide.

When should you send each email in the sequence?
EmailDelay after abandonmentGoalSubject line type
1About 1 hourReminder, no discountCart reminder
2About 24 hoursRemove the doubt (returns, delivery, reviews)Question or help offer
348 to 72 hoursLast call, optional incentiveUrgency, honest only

Stop the sequence the moment the shopper buys. A reminder sent after purchase hurts trust more than a missing reminder helps revenue.

How do you time the sequence for Black Friday?

Black Friday falls on November 27, 2026. In a sale week, shoppers decide faster, so shorten the delays: first email within 30 to 60 minutes, second the same evening or next morning, third at 24 to 48 hours. A cart abandoned on November 26 should not receive its last email on December 1 with a stale deadline.

Check the sequence before the sale starts, with a real test order. Our guide on how to prepare for Black Friday with customer reviews covers the rest of the checklist.

Should you use SMS to recover abandoned carts?

You can use an abandoned cart text if the shopper gave you consent to receive texts, not otherwise. A text that arrives without permission damages trust faster than a missed email.

Consent differs by channel. Use the table as a checklist, not as legal advice.

Should you use SMS to recover abandoned carts?

SMSExplicit opt-in to text messages, collected at checkout or sign-upRules are separate from email, confirm them with counsel

What does the law say about abandoned cart emails?

The FTC's CAN-SPAM compliance guide says each separate email in violation is subject to penalties of up to $53,088. The guide does not discuss cart abandonment. It says a message is classed by its primary purpose and that "the law views these categories narrowly." So do not assume a reminder counts as a transactional message. Treat it as marketing, include an unsubscribe link, and ask your lawyer.

Can customer reviews stop carts from being abandoned in the first place?

Reviews reduce abandonment by removing the doubt that makes a shopper leave before they pay. Baymard lists distrust with payment details at 19%, and a shopper who does not know your store has no way to judge that risk except what others say about you.

An email cannot help the shopper who never entered an email. The shopper who leaves a product page in silence is invisible to every recovery flow. Proof placed on the page, before the cart, is the only fix for those shoppers.

Where do reviews matter most before checkout?

Put them where the decision happens: product pages, collection pages and the cart page. Show the rating, the count and a few written reviews that mention the problem your buyer cares about, such as fit, delivery or returns. A product with one vague review reads as a risk. A product with dozens of specific reviews reads as a known quantity.

Can you collect reviews without an email address?

Yes. Review Collect asks customers by SMS and WhatsApp, so you are not limited to buyers who handed over an email address. Fewer reviews means less proof on the page, and less proof means more doubt at the cart. Collecting more of them is the cheapest prevention you can run before November 27.

How does Review Collect build trust before checkout?

Review Collect builds trust by getting more reviews from the customers you already have, so shoppers see proof before they ever reach checkout. It does not send cart reminders and it does not place reviews inside the checkout. Its role is upstream: more reviews on the platforms where shoppers already check you.

Review Collect sends review requests by SMS and WhatsApp through its own Meta Business account, white-label, so the message arrives from your brand. On average, the response rate on SMS and WhatsApp is 40%. Customers who rate you 1 to 3 stars land on a feedback page, and your support team gets an alert with the order details so it can call back. The customer can still choose to publish.

Review Collect multiplies your review count by 30 in 30 days, in the first month. See the review collection product and the e-commerce solution to check how it fits your Shopify store.

Recovery emails win back the shoppers who left. Reviews keep the next batch from leaving at all.
